Community of Christ Auditorium & Temple
Independence is home to the world headquarters of the Community of Christ, formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS). Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Mormon faith, designated Independence as the center of God's earthly kingdom (Zion) in 1831. However, tensions increased between the Mormons and local residents, and in 1839, they were driven out of Missouri.

Following Joseph's death in 1844 in Carthage, Illinois, the church divided into factions. The "Reorganized" Church, believed that Joseph Smith, Jr.'s eldest son, Joseph III, should be his successor and lead the church. (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) believed Brigham Young was the true leader and followed him out to Salt Lake City.)

Organized on April 6, 1860, in Amboy, Illinois, under the leadership of Joseph Smith III, the official corporate headquarters of the Community of Christ Church has been in Independence, Missouri since April 1920.

Two impressive architectural structures, the Temple and the Auditorium are available for tours to both members and nonmembers. Visitors may view the Temple's 1,600 seat sanctuary and 5,685 pipe organ as well as the Auditorium's 6,000 seat conference chamber and 6,334 pipe organ. Half-hour organ recitals are given at 3 pm. daily June, July and August; and every Sunday September through May. Please call 816-833-1000 for more information
