Stop 1 - Truman Presidential Museum & Library (816-268-8200)
1 hour and 30 minutes
Enjoy film by producer Charles Guggenheim, exhibits and memorabilia on Truman's presidency and private life. Of special interest is a full-scale reproduction of the Oval Office circa 1948 and the gravesites of Harry and Bess. The Museum has completed a $22 million renovation which includes a new multi-media exhibit with two interactive decision theaters on the Truman presidency.

Stop 2 - Vaile Mansion (816-325-7430)
Allow 45 minutes
Built in 1881, this ornate 31-room mansion is one of the finest examples of Second Empire Victorian architecture in the country; with colorful ceiling paintings, hand wood-grained trim, crystal chandeliers, and 9 marble fireplace mantels.

Stop 3 - Lunch on the Historic Independence Square (Main & Lexington)
Allow 1 hour
Enjoy lunch on the Historic Independence Square which once served as the rallying point for wagon trains heading west and many of Harry's favorite haunts. Enjoy a sandwich or full-course meal at one of the several eateries on the Square.

Stop 4 - 1859 Jail, Marshal's Home & Museum (816-461-1897)
Allow 45 minutes
Massive walls, barred windows that once housed Frank James give a chilling look at frontier justice; four feet away is federalist style house that was home for county marshal until 1920s.

Stop 5 - Pioneer Spring Cabin
Allow 20 minutes
Stop to take a look at log cabin life in the 1800s.

Stop 6 - Bingham-Waggoner Estate (816-461-3491)
Allow 45 minutes
Built in 1852 along the 1846 alignment of the Santa Fe Trail, this magnificent home was once owned by George C. Bingham, famed Civil War artist. In the 1890s the Waggoner's purchased the home and 95% of the furnishings are original to the home.

Stop 7 - National Frontier Trails Museum (816-325-7575)

During America's expansion in the 1800s three great routes led the pioneers west, the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails. All three began in or near Independence - known as the "Queen City of the Trails."

Stop 2 - Children's Peace Pavilion (816-521-3033)

Experience the challenge of building peace through a variety of hand-on activities and exhibits.

Stop 3 - Lunch and wagon tours on Historic Independence Square
Allow 1 hour and 30 minutes
Enjoy lunch at one of the several restaurants on the Square, then take a covered wagon tour with Pioneer Trails Adventures and the Wrangler as he spins tales of the past. Must call for a reservations at 816-456-4991.

Stop 4 - Puppetry Arts Institute (816-833-9777)
Allow 1 hour
Tour the puppet museum, paint a puppet head, dress it in a costume and perform an impromptu show. Free finger puppet.

Stop 5 - Truman Presidential Museum & Library (816-268-8200)
Allow 1 hour and 30 minutes
Take part in a variety of discovery area activities related to Truman's life, dress up in period clothes to look like Margaret, Bess and Harry, compete in a "race" to see who will arrive at Bess's home faster from the Truman Farm in Grandview, make a campaign buttons and a "Buck Stops Here" sign.

Stop 3 - Antiquing followed by lunch and then a Wagon Ride on Historic Independence Square
Allow 2 hours
Find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts in antique shops and then enjoy lunch on the Square at one of the wonderful restaurants. Following lunch get ready for a wagon ride around the Square with Pioneer Trails Adventures. You must call for advance reservation at 816-456-4991.

Stop 4 - Leila's Hair Museum (816-833-2955)
Allow 30 minutes (Closed Sundays and Mondays)
View a collection of hair art that was popular in the 1800s, including wreaths and jewelry.

Allow 30 minutes
The depot is filled with railroad artifacts and memorabilia that was used during the 1800s in this working two-story railroad depot. The second floor is furnished as the depot agent's residence with period furniture.

Stop 4 - Truman Depot
Turn right (or west) once you leave the Trails Museum and drive by the final stop in Truman's 1948 Whistlestop Campaign. Today, the depot is an Amtrak stop and home to the Jackson County Genealogical Society Research Library.

Stop 5 - Lunch & Shopping on the Historic Independence Square

Enjoy lunch on the Historic Independence Square which once served as the rallying point for wagon trains heading west and many of Harry's favorite haunts.
